How to Get Delisted from IP Blacklists: Complete Removal Guide

Is Your IP Address Blacklisted?

If your emails are bouncing, your server is being blocked, or your website is inaccessible to some users, your IP address may be on one or more blacklists. The good news is that most blacklists have a removal (delisting) process. This guide covers the major blacklists and how to get removed from each one.

Before starting the removal process, first check your IP against 300+ blacklists using our free tool to identify exactly which lists you are on.

Major Blacklists and Removal Procedures

1. Spamhaus (SBL, XBL, PBL, CSS)

Spamhaus is the most influential blacklist, used by most major email providers.

  • SBL (Spamhaus Block List): Manual listings for verified spam sources. Visit check.spamhaus.org, look up your IP, and follow the removal link. You must explain what caused the listing and what steps you have taken to prevent recurrence.
  • XBL (Exploits Block List): Automated listings for compromised hosts. Fix the security issue (malware, open relay, etc.) and the listing will be automatically removed within 24-48 hours.
  • PBL (Policy Block List): Dynamic/residential IP ranges. Contact your ISP to have them submit a PBL removal request.
  • CSS (Composite Snowshoe Spam): For snowshoe spam patterns. Contact Spamhaus directly with evidence of legitimate email practices.

2. Barracuda (BRBL)

Barracuda Reputation Block List is widely used by organizations running Barracuda spam filters.

  • Go to barracudacentral.org/lookups
  • Look up your IP address
  • If listed, click the removal request link
  • Fill out the form with your email address and reason
  • Removal is typically processed within 12-24 hours

3. CBL (Composite Blocking List)

CBL lists IPs showing bot-like behavior or running malware.

  • Visit abuseat.org to check your IP
  • CBL provides specific details about why your IP was listed
  • Fix the underlying issue (usually malware or compromised accounts)
  • Self-service delisting is available on the lookup page
  • Re-listing occurs if the issue is not resolved

4. SORBS (Spam and Open Relay Blocking System)

SORBS maintains multiple lists for different types of abuse.

  • Check your IP at sorbs.net
  • For most lists, you can request delisting through their web interface
  • SORBS may require a small donation for expedited removal
  • Resolution of the underlying abuse issue is required

5. UCEProtect

UCEProtect has three levels of listing severity.

  • Level 1: Individual IP listing. Expires automatically after 7 days if spam stops.
  • Level 2: IP range listing. Affects your provider's entire range. Express delisting available for a fee.
  • Level 3: ASN-wide listing. Contact your provider to address the issue at the network level.
  • Check at uceprotect.net

6. SpamCop

SpamCop listings are based on user-submitted spam reports.

  • Listings expire automatically within 24-48 hours after spam reports stop
  • No manual delisting process - you must stop the spam source
  • Check at spamcop.net

General Delisting Steps

  1. Identify the problem: Determine why your IP was listed (spam, malware, open relay, compromised account)
  2. Fix the root cause: Remediate the issue before requesting removal
  3. Request delisting: Follow each blacklist's specific removal process
  4. Monitor: Set up ongoing blacklist monitoring to catch future listings early
  5. Prevent recurrence: Implement SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and proper email hygiene

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Rather than dealing with blacklist removal reactively, set up proactive monitoring:

  • Use our Blacklist Monitoring service to continuously scan your IPs against 300+ blacklists
  • Get email alerts the moment a listing is detected
  • Access remediation guides for each blacklist directly from your dashboard

Start with a free blacklist check to see your current status.
